Mandy
Official description:
An action-horror film directed and co-written by Panos Cosmatos. The story is set in 1983 and follows devoted couple Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). However, the life they have comes crashing down suddenly and horrifyingly, when a vile band of ravaging cultists and supernatural creatures and their leader, Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache), seek to possess Mandy’s body and soul. A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiraling, surreal, bloody rampage of all out, mind-altering vengeance. Red, armed with a chainsaw and other weapons, stops at nothing to get Mandy back, leaving a bloody, brutal pile of bodies in his wake.
Wow! With that description and the premise of “Nicholas cage’s giving the performance of a lifetime,” this is an instant catch for me.
The trailer opens with Mandy reading a well-chosen paragraph from a book while a piece of ominous music plays in the background, which sets the mood for the entire trailer: A powerful evil guy is going to take something away from Cages’s character. And nothing will stop him from getting it back.
The first half of the trailer got me genuinely hooked; It made me wonder: could this be a serious movie of supernatural terror? Then we see Cage’s character forging a ‘Devil May Cry’ style of weapon, followed by bad guys riding motorcycles either taken from Mad Max or The Running Man. After that, I Immediately knew that the movie had all the classic Cage’s movie elements: Lots of yelling, suffering, whispering, and probably a lot of over the top gore scenes.
Leaving aside the fact that Cage’s plays the main character, the remaining movie elements: the music, the setting, and the use and abuse of flickering lights and red tint, all appeals to my curiosity and make me really wanna watch the movie, for better or for worse.
